You might be in transition – someone who is looking to get back into the workplace or change careers. Or maybe, you’re simply facing new technologies in your sector that you’d like to prepare for. Where do you start, how do you start?

The past few years have drastically shifted our perspective and approach to life and work. Leaders have been forced to adapt their style as work has become more distributed and less visible and requires more trust of your team. New technologies have also found their way into every aspect of our lives, blurring the boundaries between workplace and home. Striking a balance amidst the chaos can be confronting.

1

Develop a relationship with the technology.

Building trust takes time, whether you’re working with a person or a piece of technology. To become more comfortable, you need to go through different experiences together, taking time to understand each other’s abilities and limitations and how they can be complementary.

Download ChatGPT, ask it a question (e.g. How will technology affect my future?) and reflect on the response with discernment. Was it detailed enough? Does it need more context? Most of the time, it will be too broad, but engaging will help you learn how to make adjustments and use it effectively. Keep in mind that technology, like people, is also continually evolving, so it’s important to ‘stay in touch’.

2

Get to know your purpose, passion and skills. Then translate them into tech.

Technology is forcing us to move from traditional linear processes to an evolving creative process. It is also causing major shifts in workplaces, changing the nature of our jobs. If you want to future-proof your career, find out how technology will disrupt your industry, learn how it works and seek opportunities to integrate it into your role.

You should also take time to uncover what you’re good at and what drives you. By exploring your strengths and where they add value, you can remain agile as the landscape changes. If you are looking at moving into the tech space, consider how your strengths can be adapted to this environment, where your knowledge or skill gaps are and what you can do to bridge them.

3

Set boundaries and be mindful.

Regardless of where you are on your tech journey, you might have already noticed the boundaries between work and life are becoming less clear and harder to separate. To adapt, you need to redefine what each means to you and how they can co-exist. Mindful practices can help you navigate this and find the emotional, physical and mental boundaries that will keep you balanced.

When you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, stop for one minute. Yes, one minute or maybe two. Observe the situation – what is present, who are you around and why are you feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable? By pausing, you create the space and opportunity to identify the causes and ways to manage them. It may be hard at first, but over time you will get better at it.

This journey is not easy. Technology can be a black box and with the hype and fear surrounding it, it can be hard to know where to start. It’s always easier to talk to someone who’s been there and can help you navigate this, but there are also plenty of resources out there now too. Navigate wisely, and I wish you the very best on this exciting journey we’re all taking together.
