We often hear about women supporting women, but it’s less common to see two women collaborating and combining their expertise, wisdom and energy to create something bigger than they could on their own.

Colleen Callander and I met when she was the CEO of Sportsgirl. I was her coach for 10 years while she sat in that seat and what we worked towards during that time was building a high performance career as well as a high performance life.

When Colleen left the retail world after three decades in the business, I had reached my 20 year milestone as a strategic executive life coach. We decided to join forces and elevate our careers to a new level as we entered our next chapter. We co-founded our business, Human Elevation, and co-wrote a book, Elevate, which covers the lessons we wished we had been taught earlier. Today, we’d love to share them with you:

1

Commit to owning your own life

Understanding who you are, where you are going and how you will get there, sets the foundation of self. Neither of us had this skill in the beginning nor did anyone mention it as a powerful skill to master. But it is important to take the time to truly know yourself, then embrace ownership of yourself. Understand your values and strengths. Create your own five to 10 year vision, fully commit to your mental, emotional and physical health. Along with all this, adopt a growth mindset and invest in your confidence by building habits. This really is the base of true and lasting success.

2

Lead yourself before you lead others

Leadership always starts with self. You cannot lead others if you cannot lead yourself. Throughout our lives, we have learned that leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts, but more about one life influencing another. Great leadership is influence, not authority. Taking time to really create the leader you want to be starts with identifying your leadership style, building your personal brand story, contributing to a culture and being the change you wish to see.

3

Manage your life with longevity in mind

No one talked to us about the length of our careers and how to avoid burnout. The narrative we were sold was work as hard as you can. If you took a moment to recover, you were branded lazy. As a result of this culture, we both experienced burnout and had to take time away from work to recover. Fortunately, times have changed. Longevity is something to honour, something to strive for and something to invest in. Educating yourself on burnout, seeing the signs and acknowledging recovery as a high performance habit is imperative. Build boundaries, plan in 12 week power blocks and understand that your daily habits are really the source of your long term happiness. We yearn for fulfilment now rather than being achievement junkies, and look for true meaning in what we do with a lifelong investment in our wellbeing.

These three pillars – life, leadership and longevity – and committing to habits that support success in these areas will be the key to your long-term success professionally and personally. Finally, remember that you and your life are worth celebrating. We see that a lot of women find it difficult to celebrate themselves. Small wins matter and celebration is a tiny, powerful habit that builds success and momentum. So, celebrate it all.
